FOLLOW FRIDAY #5 - OBSIDIAN HOLLOW
Hey! Happy Friday, it's time for our 5th Small Business Feature.
I can't believe we've done 5 already and we have so many more to come!
This week I'm chatting to the wonderful Obsidian Hollow, who creates handmade Jewellery that all your spooky little hearts will desire! I'm always super sad when the Halloween season is over, but Obsidian Hollow keep it spooky 365 days a year!
How did Obsidian Hollow come about? How did you start?
I got made redundant due to the pandemic and wanted something to occupy me and also that I could make some money from, so Obsidian Hollow was born!
Where did the idea for the name Obsidian Hollow come from?
Obsidian is one of my favourite crystals so I knew I wanted it in the name somewhere. Hollow just seemed to fit nicely on the end.
What are your main influences/inspiration when creating your products?
Anything alternative/dark/gothic. I love alternative jewellery myself so I mainly like to create what I know I would want to wear!
Whats your process for making your ideas come to life? How are they made?
I do a lot of browsing for charms and then when I see one I like, I think how can I make that into a jewellery piece? Then I look for other charms that could complement them and get to making! Some of my ideas don’t work out as they’re too flimsy or don’t look right but it’s all trial and error.
Whats your favourite thing about being a small business owner?
The customers! I have some lovely customers that leave me the best reviews and come back for more pieces too! I can’t comprehend that people want to keep buying pieces from little old me sometimes!
And now, what’s your least favourite?
Self doubt! I always doubt myself and wonder if I’m good enough to be running a business. Especially on slower days.
What are you most looking forward to as an Independent Business when things start to go back to normal?
I’d love to have a stall somewhere eventually, like at a a market or something. I feel like that’s a long way off but maybe one day!
If you could recommend five other independent businesses to the readers, who would they be and why? Night Sky Craft - make the most gorgeous candles and is the sweetest person! Nevermore Curio - make lovely jewellery and currently have a beautiful Christmas range. Alleycats Craft - make amazing moulds and is so supportive of other businesses. Dead Inside Design - does the best alternative Disney inspired mugs! Shock Horrors - is the nicest person and does great prints!
Do you have any new items/collections coming up? - Tell us about them!
I’ve actually just released my Christmas shop update with lots of new Christmas and non-Christmas pieces!
Do you have any lockdown Music / Film / book recommendations for the readers? I don’t listen to a lot of music but books - Dracula, The Turn of the Key, ACOTAR series, Harry Potter series! On Netflix - I’ve been loving watching Benidorm from the start again actually. Such easy viewing. Also Modern Family! And I always love watching any Tim Burton films!
Be sure to go send them some love, and maybe treat yourself to some witchy delights!
Thank you for reading,
Have a wonderful weekend!
